This year's Streaming Media East conference and exhibition, held in midtown Manhattan, was a ideal time for the streaming video and audio industry to come together to exchange ideas. Moderated panels held throughout the three-day event taught new techniques, while the exhibit hall was marked by several major announcements. Here are the news highlights from the event:
Gotuit announced the launch of the Gotuit PowerVideo Suite, which allows clients to create online video libraries. One component of the suite, the Gotuit VideoMixer, allows users to create custom mixes of video content through an online interface without altering the source video. To try out the VideoMixer, go to Akon Remixed. You can combine scenes from different Akon videos to make a new remixed video, then either use the audio from those individual scenes or play one song over the whole creation.
Akamai announced the availability of Akamai Live Streaming in the Adobe Flash FLV format, for delivery of live events to recipients with the Flash player. This includes support for the On2 VP6 codec.
Limelight Networks announced that it's providing the Flash video streaming infrastructure for a new site called MyToons, which allows users to post their animations and view the work of others.
Netbreifings announced Proclaim, its new tool for creating online presentations for either large audiences or on-demand use. With Proclaim, users can capture audio and video, then combine it with additional audio, video, PowerPoint slides, and images.
Mirror Image Internet, a content delivery company, announced that it will support Microsoft's new cross-browser, cross-platform Silverlight plug-in. Silverlight was introduced at the recent National Association of Broadcasters conference in Las Vegas.
Content delivery company CacheLogic announced VelociX, a configurable content delivery network that lets users control costs by selecting different service levels for different traffic or end users. Customers can give high-bandwidth to crucial content, while reserving lower speed delivery for content targeted at smaller audiences.
Level 3 Communications announced that it will now offer caching and downloading services at part of its content delivery platform.
